Wet shaving is a traditional grooming practice that involves using a brush and soap or cream to create lather, followed by shaving with a safety razor or straight razor. It provides a closer, smoother shave compared to modern cartridge razors.

The knot size determines the coverage area and lathering ability. For smaller areas like the face, a 24-26mm knot is suitable. A 28-30mm knot offers better coverage for larger areas and extra lather production for multi pass shaves.

1. High Mountain White Badger Shaving Brush: High Mountain White (HMW) badger hair comes from the high mountains of China. It is known for its luxurious feel, excellent water retention, and soft tips. The long white tips and a thick middle band make it distinctive. HMW brushes offer a balance between softness and backbone, creating a comfortable and effective lathering experience.

2. Silvertip Badger Shaving Brush: Silvertip badger hair is sourced from the neck and muzzle of the badger. It is highly sought after for its superior water retention, superb lathering ability, and exceptionally soft tips. Silvertip brushes are known for their luxurious feel and are often considered the pinnacle of badger hair quality. They provide a comfortable and indulgent shaving experience.

3. Two Band Badger Shaving Brush: Two Band badger brushes offer a unique combination of characteristics. They have dense bristle packing with a distinctive two-band appearance, where the dark band transitions into lighter tips. These brushes provide a balance between the firmness of a pure badger brush and the softness of a silvertip. Two Band brushes are known for their excellent lathering and versatility.

4. Pure Badger Shaving Brush: Pure Badger brushes are made from the lower-grade badger hair. They offer good water absorption and lathering ability, making them a cost-effective option for wet shaving enthusiasts. While they may be slightly less soft than higher-grade brushes, Pure Badger brushes still provide effective exfoliation and lathering, contributing to a satisfying shaving experience.

Each type of badger hair brush offers a distinct combination of qualities, catering to different preferences and needs. Whether you prioritize softness, water retention, exfoliation, or a balance between these factors, there’s a badger hair brush suited to enhance your wet shaving routine.

Rinse thoroughly after use, shake off excess water, gently squeeze with a dry towel, and leave out to dry. Avoid leaving it in a damp environment, as this can lead to mold. Occasionally clean with a mild shampoo and warm water.

At the CaYuen Workshop, we celebrate the art of personalization. That’s why we keep your knot preferences in mind, never setting them until you place your order. This approach allows us to offer various finishing options, including the freedom to select no knot at all.

While we recommend our ready-to-shave brushes, we understand your desire to set your own knot. Our knots bores are crafted to be used with knots that run true to size, with bores approximately ~1.5mm over the nominal knot size. For example, a “24 MM” handle has a knot bore of ~25.5mm diameter x 15mm deep

Beware of substandard knots on the market that run small, as they can lead to a less fulfilling shaving experience. A mere 1mm reduction equals around 10% fewer bristles!

Safety razors offer a single, sharp blade that reduces irritation and ingrown hairs. They provide a close shave and are more cost-effective and environmentally friendly compared to disposable cartridges.

Blade longevity varies depending on usage and hair type. As a general guideline, replace the blade after 5-7 shaves or if you notice tugging or irritation.

shaving soap and a brush offers several advantages over modern foam in a can:

  1. Superior Lathering: Shaving soap, when properly lathered with a brush, creates a rich and creamy lather that provides better cushioning and protection for your skin during the shave. This results in a smoother and more comfortable shaving experience.

  2. Customizable Lather: With a brush and shaving soap, you have control over the amount of water and product you use, allowing you to tailor the lather consistency to your preference. This customization helps achieve optimal hydration for a close and irritation-free shave.

  3. Exfoliation: Brushing the lather onto your skin exfoliates the skin and raises the hair, preparing it for a closer shave. This helps prevent ingrown hairs and contributes to a cleaner, smoother result.

  4. Skin Hydration: Shaving soaps often contain natural moisturizing ingredients that help keep your skin hydrated and nourished, reducing post-shave dryness and irritation.

  5. Environmental Impact: Shaving soap and brushes generate less waste compared to aerosol foam cans, which are often non-recyclable. Using traditional shaving products is a more environmentally friendly choice.

  6. Cost-Effective: While the initial investment in a shaving brush and soap may be higher, these products last longer than canned foams. Over time, using traditional shaving products can be more cost-effective.

  7. Ritualistic Experience: Shaving with a brush and soap provides a traditional and ritualistic experience that many enthusiasts find enjoyable and satisfying. It adds a sense of luxury and mindfulness to your grooming routine.

  8. Better Scent Selection: Shaving soaps come in a wide variety of scents, allowing you to choose fragrances that you personally enjoy. This can enhance your overall shaving experience.

In summary, using shaving soap and a brush offers improved lathering, exfoliation, skin hydration, and a more personalized and eco-friendly shaving routine. It’s a choice that combines practicality with a touch of traditional elegance.

Our recommended method for using a shaving soap sample is designed to provide you with the best lathering experience:

  1. Prepare Your Lathering Bowl: Transfer approximately 1 teaspoon of the shaving soap sample into your lathering bowl.

  2. Add Warm Water: Add about 2 tablespoons of warm water to the soap in the bowl. Allow the soap to soak in the water for a few minutes. This step helps to soften the soap and prepare it for lathering.

  3. Work With Your Brush: Take your presoaked shaving brush and gently swirl it over the soap in the bowl. This will load the brush with the softened soap.

  4. Build Lather:  Begin working the brush in circular motions to build a thick and creamy lather. If needed, you can gradually add more water to achieve the desired consistency.
